From Drab to Fab: a DIY makeover

Finding free stuff on the side of the road is pretty much the best thing ever for a person with a DIY habit. So when I spied this vintage dining room sideboard with a giant sign saying FREE, it was in the car in no time.

I knew exactly what it would be transformed into. Our new TV unit.

Up until the paint was dry on this sexy beast we used an old coffee table to hold the TV, and our collection of DVDs was assigned random hiding places around the room. This ‘found’ unit is a great height, has lots of storage, and is the perfect fit for the space. The only issue was the super dated look. I knew it needed to be bright, so ideally white and then have something special inside. The solution was leftover Jazzleberry Jam by Para Paints to match the living room walls. And of course, life isn’t fun if you don’t throw in some gold spray paint, so the legs and some additional hardware were lovingly sprayed:)

It took multiple heavy rounds of sanding with coarse grit sandpaper to get the finish off. That was followed by a cleaning and a good coat of primer inside and out. I then sanded it down again using a fine grit sandpaper to smooth it out, applied another coat of primer, and then painted the inside Jazzleberry Jam and the outside Jo Jo Whitewash. I also used some wood filler in the doors to get rid of the ridged edges and clean it up a bit. Which I am so glad I did! Well worth the effort.

Another bonus to this new unit is it’s higher than the previous table so it gave me the perfect excuse to re-work the feature wall. Again:) Thank goodness for little jars of wall filler and touch up paint:)

Re-working the wall gave me an excuse to work in two fabulous mirrors I’ve found recently at an antique store by my office. It’s been quite the transformation. I think I like this most recent evolution (below) the best. What do you think?
