Book Review: Are You Sleeping by Kathleen Barber

Book Review Are You Sleeping by Kathleen Barber Heatherinheels blog

This book was only bookmarked once, for sleeping. Otherwise, it was open and shut in a few short hours during an overnight stay at our cottage a few weekends ago. Are You Sleeping, a novel by Kathleen Barber, was a quick, engaging, and great read. It’s the ideal book for the beach, the Muskoka chair, or a plane or train ride.

Here is the synopsis from publisher Simon & Schuster Canada:

Serial meets Ruth Ware’s In A Dark, Dark Wood in this inventive and twisty psychological thriller about a mega-hit podcast that reopens a murder case—and threatens to unravel the carefully constructed life of the victim’s daughter.

The only thing more dangerous than a lie…is the truth.

Josie Buhrman has spent the last ten years trying to escape her family’s reputation and with good reason. After her father’s murder thirteen years prior, her mother ran away to join a cult and her twin sister Lanie, once Josie’s closest friend and confidant, betrayed her in an unimaginable way. Now, Josie has finally put down roots in New York, settling into domestic life with her partner Caleb, and that’s where she intends to stay.

The only problem is that she has lied to Caleb about every detail of her past—starting with her last name.

When investigative reporter Poppy Parnell sets off a media firestorm with a mega-hit podcast that reopens the long-closed case of Josie’s father’s murder, Josie’s world begins to unravel. Meanwhile, the unexpected death of Josie’s long-absent mother forces her to return to her Midwestern hometown where she must confront the demons from her past—and the lies on which she has staked her future.

Doesn’t reading that just make you hear this afterwards?

And honestly, at the end of some chapters that is the noise my brain heard. It was like listening to a 1950’s radio program in my head. I was leaning in to hear and learn more, I was captivated by the players and how their stories would unfold, and I was left guessing what might come next. The ending was a bit predictable, but it was an enjoyable read nonetheless.

The tale was well told and had me reflecting on the impact the current mass social media has – can anyone hide anymore? What if they have nothing to hide but just want a fresh start? Can you be anonymous anymore?

On that deep thought is where I will leave you. Other than to say, if you’re looking for a great (quick) beach bag read – Are You Sleeping fits the bill.

Are You Sleeping by Kathleen Barber is published by Simon & Schuster Canada is available August 2017.

Happy Reading!

Disclosure: Being a Simon & Schuster Advance Reader means I receive uncorrected advance reader proof copies of books every so often. And every so often I really enjoy one of those books, so I decide to write a review post. I’m not asked to do so, and I don’t get paid. I do it because we should all read more:)…and it’s my website and I can do what I want:)
