How to paint & upholster a bench or ottoman

I am just tickled pink with how well this project turned out.  And it took me less than an hour. No joke.  Granted there was time waiting for paint to dry, which as you know….is like waiting for paint to dry.  But otherwise, it was a super simple project with awesome results.

All you need is an old bench or ottoman, some spray paint, a staple gun, fabric, and quilt batting.

Here’s the bench before:

The first thing I did was remove the old needlepoint cover.

Wasn’t it pretty? My great aunt Lillian did it and this item of furniture lived in my Nana’s rec room (her basement) for as long as I can remember.  Then it moved it to the cottage, and now it’s getting set to live a fabulous new life in our guest room.  (yes, this is the first little project for that room’s makeover!!)  The stitching was coming apart and honestly after living in storage at the cottage for the past little while it was a bit musty and needed to go.

I gave the wood a quick clean removing any dust and then took it outside to get spray painted.  Outside, in the snow, in flip flops, in late February:) I’m wild like that.  A few quick coats and it was done.  I picked a satin finish and love it.

Next I added a few layers of quilt batting for extra cushy-ness and stapled the new fabric on.  (side note: total score – on clearance at Fabricland for SIX bucks a meter! Faaaaaa-bric-land, FA-BRIC-Land!)

Screwed the two together and ba-da-bing-ba-da-boom, she’s done!

As DH would say, ‘Viola!” (he thinks it’s funny because it’s like the French word voila).  But what’s EVEN funnier is, Viola is my Nana’s name.  So VIOLA indeed! Especially when it comes to this bench:)

Isn’t she pretty? She’s the first little project for the guest room and it’s acting as a great point of inspiration for the rest of it.

I love your DH comments about viola--and the actual significance it has for you. My DH's favourite word when he needs a bit of a flourish is olé. I'm not sure when Spanish became Canada's third official language. As well, he's all over the Fabricland jingle. I'll say, "I went to Fabricland," and he'll say, "Fabricland Fabricland?" Apparently it's no longer a one-name store.

Anyways, total aside. The bench looks great, and I can't wait to see the rest of the room.
