Life outside the perfect @Instagram photo

So a thought occurred to me the other day as I was moving stuff from my kitchen/dining room into the living room.

Before I get to the thought though, let me list out the things I moved:

  • two bicycles
  • bread, bagels, and a baguette
  • a basket of cycling accessories
  • three pairs of shoes
  • one pair of rubber boots
  • laundry detergent
  • a laundry basket
  • two dining room chairs
  • my purse
  • both dogs

I’m sure a few things have crossed your mind by now….like, why does she have two bicycles in her kitchen/dining room? and why on earth is the living room a better place for any of these objects?!

Firstly, let me explain that the living room is not a better place.  It was simply a holding place.  Because what I was doing was ‘staging’ my kitchen so I could share the finished project.

And so now to the thought that occurred to me….

…..I wondered if you know bloggers stage things?  We move stuff outside the view of our camera to get the perfect instagram shot and photos for our blogs.  I really hope this isn’t shocking.

You see, normally the boot rack doesn’t just have a pretty pair of Hunter boots and some runners.  Normally it’s got a random collection of his & hers shoes piled up.  Normally, the laundry detergent just sits on top of the washer.  Normally my purse (and DH’s work bag) sit on the window seat in the kitchen.  Normally there are dishes in the sink, and normally the surfaces aren’t as clean and tidy. And yes, normally there are two bicycles in my dining room.

Normally….wait for the shocker here….. my house looks like everyone else’s.  Because you know, LIFE!

So why do I stage? Is it to pretend or to hide? No.  It’s like prom for my house.  When I am getting ready to show a part of my house, a part of me, with the world, I give it a sense of occasion and we get all gussied up.

I buy flowers.  I clean up.  I put a little make up on, and we dance the night away.

So there you have it.  A little slice of life outside the perfect @instagram shot.

OMG ! This is quite a shock; it may take me some time to internalize that revelation. (ha ha ha). There have been times in my life when I've tried to create a home that looks like it's been staged... and it's doesn't work . Life shows it's messy, cluttered face and just won't stay tidy no matter how hard I tried to match the calmness we see in magazines, television and blogs. I still have hope for a lovely living space but I don't try so hard to reach that unrealistic goal every day ; keep posting your beautiful photos to inspire us.

Thanks so much Karen! I have to admit I rather enjoy a house to look lived in (in reality!). I want to smell foods, see signs of life:) Thanks so much for reading!

Great post. I think it's something we don't realize when we read all of those beautiful blogs every day. It's great to have a reminder. Also, I now feel less silly about the number of things I moved out of our bedroom (bathrobes, slippers, random piece of wood, leftover light switch) before I photographed it on the weekend.
