How to paint your kitchen cupboards (w/ @ParaPaints)
The moment I settled on a lovely shade of white for the kitchen walls, I knew I would have to try and paint the island. I wanted something to anchor the entire double room, and now that it’s done I am patting myself on the back. It’s SUCH a lovely anchor:)
Getting there was a bit nerve wracking though…..
I really didn’t know how well the cupboards would take to paint. I didn’t know if I would need to sand the bananas out of them, or if I would need to heat gun a layer off in order to paint or… oh who knows! The blogosphere was rife with advice, and I was still stumped.
So I winged it.
After discovering how well the Super Stick primer adhered to the walls, I decided to cover a small area of the island to test it out. Once it was dry, I applied two quick coats of Para Paints 4305 Ultra Furniture & Cabinet Paint in Rock Climbing P5109-85 (which is the same as the dining room chairs).
After a few days I took my nails and dragged my claws over it, and guess what?! Nothing happened.
So I did it again.
And nothing happened.
And then I did a little clap & happy dance!
….and I got to work and primed and painted the whole thing! In order to give the paint the best chance possible, I let each coat dry for a full 24 hours before applying more. In total, I applied three coats.
Even though I was only painting the outside, I made my life much easier by removing the drawer doors and painting them outside (bringing them inside at night).
Once everything was dry, I put the doors back on and re-attached the hardware and TAA-DAAA!!!
It’s so lovely!!! It makes the whole room come together and really does anchor the space.
That, folks, is what we call a grand success in the DIY experiment books.
